Herrgottskirche, Tilman Riemenschneiders Marienaltar, Creglingen
Virgin Mary’s altar.
Wooden altar (9,20 Meter high, 3,68 Meter wide) by Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1460 – 7 July 1531), a German sculptor and woodcarver active in Würzburg from 1483. He was one of the most prolific and versatile sculptors of the transition period between late Gothic and Renaissance. In the Peasants’ War in 1525, he supported the peasants. After the victory of the “Swabian Union” over the peasants, Riemenschneider was captured, tortured and banned. As a punishment, his hands were probably broken.
