Cienfuegos is the youngest among Cuba's bigger towns. Columbus was here in 1494 but not before 1745 a spanish Fort was erected for protection from pirates who used the Bahia de Jagua as a clandestine refgue. Subsequently french and spanish settlers enlarged the settlemant. 

The towns's name can be translated as a hundred fires but in fact it was named after a spnish governor.
