Railway startet in Cuba earlier than in it`s motherland Spain: 1834/1837. Steam engine trains played an important role in sugar cane and rum production. Sugar cane has to be processed very fast. Steam engines were driven by fuel oil as there is no coal in Cuba. The collapse of the Sovietunion led to extrem lack of any ressources such as oil. Railways suffered a severe breakdown. Nowadays most of the remaining steam engine trains serve as tourist attractions such as in the Parque Tematico in Marcelo Salado between Remedios and Calbarien, This railway museum is very authentically combinated with a sugar mill (decommissioned in 1998). Illustrated histories of slave culture, the sugar industry, and pre-diesel locomotives are shown here.
