Georgia's capital Tbilisi or Tiflis was founded in 5th century lying on the Silk Roadand. Located strategically between Caucasus / Europe and Asia, Tbilisi saw every conquering power You can imagine: Roman Empire, Parthia, Sassanid Persia, Arabs, Byzantine Empire, and Seljuk Turks.

In 12th century Georgia became united again with Tbilisi as capital. But soon afterwards Iran people and Mongoles (Timur Lang) conquered. In 17th century Turkishs, Iranian, Persian and Georgian control alternated.

In 1813 Georgia was annexed by the Russian Empire. After the Russian Revolution of 1917 Georgia became intependant just for 3 years as part of the Transcaucasian Federation. Since 1921 it was part of the USSR. In 1991 Georgia became independnat again, but no internal peace until the Rose Revolution in 2003. Since then mafia and poltical corruption have decreased.

Externally tensions with Russia led into thr Russion-Georgian war in 2008. Russian forces remained in South Ossetia and Abkhazia the independence of which it soon recognized.
